In God of War Ragnarok, closing dimensional rifts known as Hel Tears is essential for protecting the realms from invading forces. This side quest, known as the Hel to Pay Favor, triggers automatically during the main story campaign. Players who take the time to track down and seal these tears will earn valuable upgrade materials for their equipment.
Understanding the Hel to Pay Favor
The quest officially initiates during Chapter 12 when Kratos and his companion encounter realm tears spawning waves of enemies. To close each rift, players must defend their companion while a timer counts down. Managing crowds effectively with wide-reaching weapon attacks is key to surviving these encounters.
Story-Related Hel Tear Locations
The first two Hel Tears are tied directly to main story progression and cannot be missed. The initial rift opens at Sindri's House, forcing Kratos to fend off hostile creatures in the realm between realms. Shortly after, a second tear appears during the journey through Helheim near The Gleaming Bale.
Exploration-Based Hel Tear Locations
After completing the narrative encounters, players must travel across four different realms to locate the remaining tears. You can find additional rifts at the Aurvangar Wetlands in Svartalfheim, near the Well of Urd in Midgard, within The Strond in Alfheim, and around The Southern Wilds in Vanaheim. Most of these locations sit conveniently close to Mystic Gateways for quick travel access.
Rewards for Closing Every Realm Tear
Sealing each tear rewards players with a Frozen Spark, along with experience points for Kratos and his companion. Combining six Frozen Sparks forms a complete Frozen Flame, which is required to fully upgrade the Leviathan Axe at the forge. Completing the Favor also yields additional crafting resources like Essence of Hel and Dust of Realms.
